A percentage fee translates into dollars based on the balance and the way it is charged. A cost deducted within a fund may not appear as a separate withdrawal from an account. Other costs can sit outside the headline fee.
A hypothetical comparison can isolate the fee effect by keeping contributions and gross returns identical. The difference in ending values includes direct charges and the growth those removed dollars might otherwise have earned.
